I know Tom well. He is one of those rare humans whom you genuinely feel that it is a privilege to have shared the planet with. He is a lovely guy with a cracking self-deprecating sense of humour.
To describe him as unique is frankly a statement you would expect from the government Department of the Bleedin' Obvious. He is certainly a self created one-off and he isn't about to create another.
As a young man, and promising guitarist he suffered an horrific motor cycle accident which left him quadriplegic, permanently confined to a wheelchair and unable to hold a guitar much less play one.
After a considerable period of feeling extremely pissed off and downright useless he decided there was not much future in either and got someone to put a guitar on his lap and a bottleneck slide over his left hand index finger.
On that day began Tom's fight back and journey to becoming an internationally respected lap style slide guitar player and one of the most inspirational performers you will ever have the privilege of seeing.
I know how hard that was for him to achieve. It was not a miracle recovery but the grim determination of a man not about to cave-in in the face of adversity.
He has re-invented guitar playing to conquer the straightforward impossibilities he was faced with and he now has a fanbase studded with legends of the acoustic Blues world.
As I said, inspirational is the only word for it.
Its been a while since Tom graced the boards at Bluefunk. Many of you will remember him and be thrilled by this news. He is unforgettable.
